Social isolation damages our success as well as our mental and physical health. And I speak from personal experience. I’m  terrible at networking — online or in person. So please, take just 18 minutes to watch this delightfully inspiring TEDx talk by Barbara Sher about the power of connection — with strangers.

And discover how you can make your dreams come true.

I’m not kidding.

This is not woo-woo. As a matter of fact, Barbara Sher is going to trash-talk “positive thinking.” (And I’m pretty certain she’d have a few things to say about “The Secret” as well. She apparently doesn’t take any nonsensical guff.)

End Social Isolation: Barbara Sher’s Success Team Method in Brief

  1. You get a team (not your close friends and family because they already have preconceived attitudes towards you; “strangers are great”).
  2. You figure out what you want.
  3. Then you say (to the team), “Here’s my wish and here’s my obstacle. Here’s what I want and here’s why I cannot have it.”

You need to say both the wish and the obstacle because “if you don’t say both (of) those things, nothing happens.” If we simply say, “I want to get a van for my business,” people will respond “Oh, that’s nice. New or used?” But if we say, “I want to get a van for my business, but I can’t afford to take on more debt,” people immediately start thinking of how to solve that problem — because “we are problem-solving animals. People want to help.”
